As communities across parts of Mindanao continue recovering from a powerful earthquake that damaged homes, businesses, and public infrastructure, ISKCON Sri Sri Radha Madhava Mandir in Taguig City has launched a Food for Life Relief initiative to support affected families through daily prasadam distribution and compassionate community outreach.
Scheduled to begin on June 17 and continue through the end of the month, the relief effort aims to provide nourishment and encouragement to residents facing the difficult task of rebuilding their lives after the disaster. While ISKCON centers across the Philippines remained largely unaffected, devotees have quickly organized resources to assist communities that suffered the greatest impact.
Natural disasters often remind humanity of the temporary nature of material circumstances. At such times, practical service, compassion, and spiritual support become especially valuable in helping communities recover and move forward.
Communities in Sarangani Face Significant Challenges
According to Indravali Devi Dasi, Temple Manager of ISKCON Manila, devotees throughout the Philippines have reported being safe following the earthquake.
“Most devotees live far from the affected areas. By Krishna’s mercy, no ISKCON temples were affected, and our devotees are safe,” she explained. “Some newer devotees reside in Mindanao, but they are also doing well.”
Devotees in Davao City and other regions of Mindanao likewise confirmed their safety. However, the situation has proven far more challenging for many local residents, particularly those living in Sarangani Province, one of the areas most severely affected by the earthquake.
Widespread Damage Across Affected Areas
Reports from the region indicate that many families experienced significant damage to their homes and properties. Commercial establishments, local roads, and other infrastructure also sustained varying degrees of destruction, creating additional obstacles for communities attempting to return to normal life.
“The local communities, especially in Sarangani Province, have been the most affected,” said Indravali. “Many people experienced damage to their homes and properties, and there is widespread fear and trauma among the residents.”
Beyond the visible structural damage, many residents continue coping with uncertainty and emotional distress, common consequences following major natural disasters.
Although ISKCON does not currently operate temples in the most severely affected locations, devotees have maintained communication with local residents and congregation members to better understand immediate needs and identify effective ways to offer assistance.

Food for Life Relief Initiative Begins June 17
In response to the crisis, ISKCON Manila has organized a dedicated Food for Life Relief program focused on delivering Krishna prasadam—sanctified vegetarian meals—to earthquake-affected communities.
The initiative will involve volunteers traveling to impacted areas and distributing freshly prepared meals on a daily basis throughout the relief period.
“We have been offering prayers daily for all the victims affected by the earthquake,” said Indravali. “At ISKCON Sri Sri Radha Madhava Mandir in Taguig City, Metro Manila, we are planning a Food for Life prasadam distribution program beginning on June 17 and continuing through the end of the month. We are currently collecting donations and seeking support to make this service successful.”
The program combines practical humanitarian assistance with the spiritual tradition of sharing prasadam, food first offered to Lord Krishna and then distributed as an act of compassion and service.
Nourishment Beyond Physical Relief
In the Vedic tradition, feeding others is considered a sacred duty. While relief efforts primarily address immediate physical needs, prasadam distribution also carries a deeper dimension of goodwill, unity, and spiritual care.
The Sanskrit word dharma refers to one’s duty and responsibility. During times of hardship, serving others selflessly becomes a meaningful expression of dharma. Such service strengthens communities and reminds individuals that they are not alone in their struggles.
For many families affected by disaster, even a simple meal can provide comfort, stability, and hope amid uncertainty.

The Global Legacy of Food for Life
The current Food for Life Relief effort forms part of ISKCON’s internationally recognized Food for Life program, one of the world’s largest vegetarian food relief networks.
Inspired by the teachings of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, Food for Life has served millions of meals worldwide through volunteer-driven initiatives focused on compassion, service, and community welfare.
Over several decades, Food for Life volunteers have participated in relief operations following earthquakes, floods, typhoons, conflicts, and humanitarian emergencies across numerous countries.
The guiding principle behind the program is simple yet profound: no one should go hungry, especially when assistance can be offered through collective effort and goodwill.
For ISKCON Manila, the present mission represents an opportunity to put these principles into action while standing in solidarity with those facing the consequences of the earthquake.
Devotees Respond Through Prayer and Service
Alongside logistical preparations, devotees have responded spiritually by increasing their prayers and seeking divine guidance during the relief effort.
“Devotees have responded by taking shelter of Krishna and increasing their prayers and surrender,” Indravali explained.
Such responses reflect a foundational principle of Krishna consciousness: practical action and spiritual dependence should work together rather than exist separately. While volunteers organize transportation, food preparation, and distribution, they also pray for the well-being of those affected.
This balanced approach recognizes both immediate humanitarian needs and the deeper human search for strength, peace, and resilience during difficult times.
Addressing Emotional and Community Recovery
Relief efforts often focus on physical necessities such as food, water, and shelter. However, community recovery also involves emotional healing.
According to reports from affected regions, many residents continue experiencing fear and anxiety following the earthquake. The presence of volunteers, community support networks, and ongoing assistance can help restore confidence and stability during the recovery process.
The Food for Life program seeks not only to distribute meals but also to offer encouragement and human connection to those facing uncertainty.
Appeal for Support from the Worldwide Community
As preparations continue, ISKCON Manila has extended an appeal to devotees, supporters, and well-wishers around the world to assist the Food for Life Relief mission through donations, prayers, and encouragement.
“We humbly appeal to the worldwide ISKCON community to support our Food for Life relief efforts,” said Indravali. “We are preparing to travel to the affected areas and distribute Krishna prasadam to the victims daily. We cannot accomplish this service without your prayers, encouragement, and support.”
She further emphasized that the initiative reflects Srila Prabhupada’s long-standing desire that no one living near an ISKCON center should suffer from hunger.
“By helping this initiative, you will bring hope, relief, and smiles to many people,” she said. “After all, sharing prasadam is sharing Krishna’s love.”
Conclusion: Compassion in Action During Times of Crisis
The Food for Life Relief initiative organized by ISKCON Manila demonstrates how spiritual values can inspire meaningful humanitarian action during times of hardship. As communities in Mindanao continue rebuilding after the earthquake, the distribution of prasadam offers practical assistance while fostering hope, solidarity, and compassion.
Natural disasters remind us that material conditions can change unexpectedly. Yet they also reveal the enduring strength of service, cooperation, and human kindness. Through dedicated volunteers, heartfelt prayers, and the sharing of sanctified food, ISKCON’s Food for Life Relief effort seeks to bring comfort to those affected and contribute positively to the ongoing recovery of earthquake-stricken communities.
In the Vedic understanding, sincere service offered for the welfare of others becomes a powerful expression of compassion and higher purpose, benefiting both the giver and the receiver.
